Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll Bowl Ingredients
These bowls use all the typical ingredients you'd expect in traditional tuna rolls!
Tuna mix:
- Canned tuna
- Mayo
- Green onions
- Sriracha hot sauce
- A touch of sesame oil
Body and Toppings:
- White jasmine rice (cooked)
- Panko crumbs (this is the crispy element!)
- Cucumber (shredded or sliced)
- Shredded carrots
- Optional: wasabi mayo sauce (in the recipe), dried seaweed topping, toasted sesame seeds, teriyaki sauce
The magic of this dish is really the spicy tuna mix (more below) and crispy panko topping!
Why it's a Perfect Way to Use Canned Tuna
Because its convenient, cheap, easy to find, and just as healthy as raw tuna! Mash the tuna with mayo, sriracha sauce (or chilli crisp oil), a TINY bit of sesame oil, and green onion. Delicious.
If you're lucky enough to have sushi-grade tuna on hand, use that instead.
What's the Crispy Stuff?
The crispy stuff in these delectable Crispy Spicy Tuna Bowls is toasted panko! The secret is to toast the panko on a pan until golden brown. Then top the assembled bowl with your crispy panko. Voila!
What If I Don't Have Sushi Rice?
If you don't have sushi rice on hand, you can absolutely use normal white jasmine rice or even brown rice.
I would avoid using basmati or parboiled rice because their textures aren't sticky enough for sushi bowls.
You don't even have to season the rice in this recipe because it's meant to be more a of a sushi "hack".
Crispy Spicy Tuna Bowl Serving Ideas
- Rice paper boats - like tacos, but made of rice paper
- Romaine lettuce boats - like tacos, but lettuce
- Sushi burrito - wrap it all up in a huge sheet of seaweed (PS. I couldn't think of a way to use the word boat in this third line)
Do I Serve It Warm or Cold?
COLD, please! You can serve it with the rice warm, but if you heat up the tuna mixture it won't be pretty.
Basically, the mayo in the tuna mixture will separate from the heat. This causes a big, gloopy mess. Beware!

Recipe for Crispy Spicy Tuna Bowl
Crispy Spicy Tuna Sushi Bowl (with Wasabi Mayo Sauce)
Ingredients
Base
- 1 cup sushi rice or white Jasmine rice
- 2 cup tap water
Tuna Mix
- 1 can tuna low salt
- 3 tablespoon mayo
- 1 teaspoon sriricha sauce OR ½ teaspoon chilli crisp
- ¼ cup chopped green onion
- ⅛ teaspoon sesame oil
Toppings
- ¼ cup Pano crumbs
- ¼ cup shredded carrot
- ¼ cup shredded or sliced cucumber
- shredded dried seaweed (nori), teriyaki sauce, sesame seeds optional
Optional: Wasabi Mayo Sauce
- 2 tablespoon mayo
- ½ teaspoon water
- ¼ teaspoon wasabi prepared
Instructions
Cook Rice
- Rinse rice under cold water three times in a small pot. Add two cups water to cover rice, then heat on low covered for ~20 min until rice is cooked. Prepare tuna and veggies while rice is cooking. Note: if using SUSHI rice, use 1.5 cups of water to cook with the rice.
Make Tuna Mix and Prep Veggies
- Drain can of tuna and add to a bowl. Add mayo, chopped green onion, chopped celery, sesame oil. Mash all ingredients to achieve your desired texture.
- Thinly shred carrots and cucumber into matchsticks. Optional: slice or cube the cucumber.
Prep Panko and Assemble Bowl
- Immediatley before serving, toast panko crumbs in a dry pan on medium heat. Gently toss crumbs until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Place rice in bowl. Then, arrange veggies and tuna mix to your style.
- Optional: drizzle with Wasabi Mayo sauce, dried seaweed , toasted seasame seeds
Optional Wasabi Mayo Sauce
- Mix mayo, water, and wasbi well in a small bowl. Add or reduce the water to achieve desired thinness. Then, drizzle over the tuna when assembled.
Notes
- You'll know if it's sushi rice if the bag says "sushi rice" or "short grain rice". Don't use risotto or basmati rice.
- Warning: wasabi is STRONG and SPICY. If you made the wasabi sauce too spicy, add in more mayo to balance it out.
- Chilli crisp is sometimes called chili oil on the package.
